Feathered friends

A Handful of Civilised Friends

By Hannah Colless, 20 April 2011

The first recognition of Katrina Rhodes' talent was bittersweet. At the tender age of five she was unjustly disqualified from the Sydney Morning Herald's under 12 drawing competition because her submission was thought to be drawn by a guardian or adult.

Luckily this early encounter with injustice didn't turn Rhodes off art and she went on to receive all the recognition she deserves in a successful career as a freelance artist. And while she's well established in the art world, 'A Handful of Civilised Friends' is her debut exhibition.

The exhibition, opening Thursday April 21 at No Vacancy Gallery, showcases 21 works featuring the characters Rhodes has spent the last year and a half creating. Rhodes has emulated the traditional portraiture style with but with a touch of the obscure. Rather than seeing traditionally sombre human faces in these portraits, you'll find a number of feathery faces staring back at you with such naive innocence that you can't help but smile.

Rhodes' painting style is impressively detailed and accurate, stemming from an interest in Gothic 12th century art, and also inspired by the 16th, 17th and 18th century periods. With so much abstract art around, it's a welcome change to see an artist who works with such delicate detail.

Don't miss a chance to smirk in the face of tradition and have a few wines before the impending bombardment of public holidays closes down this town.
