As a fervent theatre-goer myself, I highly respect quality productions, inspirational performers, diverse plays and a buzzing atmosphere. For years I’ve been a subscriber to Belvoir St Theatre and for every production, both in the Up and Downstairs spaces, it morphs into something even more exciting and awe-inspiring.
Located in Surry Hills, socially it constructs an earthy, authentic ambience full of creativity, art and culture. With a friendly and helpful team of Production, Customer Service and of course Front of House who most importantly fill up your wine glass, they make you feel at home every visit. Belvoir St produces plays that many theatre companies dare not, with controversial and thought-provoking productions. Belvoir always pushes the boundaries of theatre that little bit further, shocking yet simultaneously inspiring and emotionally moving audiences.
The 2010 Production list can be viewed online, however I would strongly recommend seeing an Upstairs production while you can, as the Artistic Director, Neil Armfield, after fifteen years with Company B, is leaving at the end of 2010, and to say the least he is a theatre genius, so you would do yourself an honour by seeing one of his last theatrical gems. As for Downstairs, it similarly hosts fascinating theatre, but also gives opportunities to workshop, produce and perform local playwright’s works, extending Sydney talent to one of Australia’s most respectable theatre companies’ stages.
Belvoir St Theatre also hosts an Education Program, extending its arms to school children and teachers alike, providing them with as much access to theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes, as possible. Without a doubt you’ll have a fantastic theatre experience visiting Belvoir St, Surry Hills, as you let the Creative Team’s work stun, shock and impress you. Ticket prices vary depending on Up and Downstairs performances, Downstairs being approximately $20 cheaper, and of course prices waver for Preview shows and under 30s get discount tickets for Sunday productions.
