After nearly a decade under the radar, the artist known as Blokk makes a comeback with a solo exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery.
The name is intriguing enough as it is. Just Blokk- like Cher, Sting or Rihanna. There's something about one-word names that sparks curiosity. Only important people can get away with a one-word name. But unlike these uni-titled celebs, Blokk doesn't seek out the limelight.
This Melbourne-based artist has a few decades on most of the hip, young i-crowd who are moving their way up the fickle art ladder. Blokk is from a pre-digital age and disreguards commercialism. His artworks cannot be mass-produced or confined to a USB stick. Instead, in his upcoming exhibition, they are spread over 30 life-sized pieces, which exude the skill and confidence of someone with experience. You might say that Blokk has been around the block, and he's all the better for it.
Blokk's latest works are inspired by 1940s flash tattoo art and are eloquently executed with spray paint and fine brush detail. They'll be exhibiting at No Vacancy Gallery from July 15-July 24, with the exhibition opening on Thursday July 14 from 6pm.
