The Story of Mary MacLane

Confessions Of A Teenage Feminist

By Hannah Colless, 22 November 2011

Whether you think Mary Maclane was a pioneering feminist and inspiring writer, or just a bit of a floosy who managed to turn her saucy rants into a money-making scheme- it is undeniable that she was an interesting lady. The 19 year-old diarist turned controversial media personality has remained internationally influential since her memoirs were first published in 1902, and now Mary MacLane is being brought back to life (through theatre, not voodoo) in a limited season at The Malthouse.

MacLane's scandalous confessionals caught the attention of many a young woman when they were published at the beginning of the 20th century. And while the "unsavoury" nature of her memoirs made them wildly unpopular among the conservative public, she sold more than 100,000 copies in the first month.

The Story of Mary MacLane By Herself opens at The Malthouse Theatre on November 25 and is a unique adapation by Bojana Novakovic and Tanya Goldberg (Ride On Theatre) of MacLane's original memoirs. This juicy piece of theatre lets audiences delve into the mind of this infamously debaucherous and outspoken young woman, who would always kiss and tell.
