Don't Be a Square Eyes

By Hannah Colless, 01 June 2010

I know it’s hard to pry the remote control from your fingers and it’s almost impossible to switch off Lost or Master Chef, but answer me this- when was the last time you saw some theatre? If your answer was, “last week,” or “yesterday,” or “I’m in a play right now, reading this on my iphone” then good on you. But if your answer was something more along the lines of, “it was when I was six and Aunt Florence took me to a Pinocchio pantomime” then listen up. Theatre is alive, it’s kicking and it’s a hell of a lot better than reality TV. If you need proof, Malthouse Theatre is just that.

Malthouse Theatre stands out in the heart of Melbourne's arts precinct. The old brick malthouse is a cultural hub. By day the cafe/bar has a serene yet vibrant atmosphere and is scattered with VCA students. By night it will be buzzing with theatre goers. Malthouse is very aware of the changing dynamics of a theatre competing with contemporary life but they don’t cower in its presence. They face it head on- chins and curtains up. The result is a variety of high quality contemporary Australian theatre, which is greatly collaborative. They make the most of the multi-layered possibilities of theatre, combining the talents of writers, directors, designers, choreographers, audio artists and performers to create a wholly sensual experience.

The folks at Malthouse recognise that theatre is “inherently and profoundly sexual.” And when you think about it, theatre is a bit like sex. It’s raw, sweaty, spontaneous and never quite the same on any two occasions, even if it’s the same people performing it. It can leave you utterly disappointed or immensely satisfied but with Malthouse Theatre’s flawless track record it’s pretty clear that they know how to push the right buttons.

Malthouse Theatre is one of Melbourne’s most renowned theatres and this season is sure to live up to expectations. There’s a range of exciting plays with a taste of everything, from the comical in The Threepenny Opera, the political in A Woman in Berlin or the desperate and romantic in Maybe Forever and Sappho...to name a few.  So drag yourself out of your nest on the couch and visit the beautiful Malthouse Theatre. Unlike television it will be an in your face sensual feast, which is completely 3D but without the stupid glasses (and everyone knows 2D is so 2009).
