Have you ever wondered what infinity looks like? It’s a bit harsh on the brain thinking about things like that, isn’t it? Well, from tonight you catch a glimpse of infinity, and it’s not as far away as you might have thought. As soon as night falls there will be a glittering tunnel to another world in the middle of Melbourne’s gritty centre.
The Infinity Tube is a public light sculpture that uses an infinite mirror illusion to create an endless tunnel, allowing viewers to stand still and psychologically enter a space that doesn’t exist. The artist, Yake Weiss, creates sculptural and video works which reference the human body in an altered state.
It’s up to you how you interpret this work. Without getting too graphic- could the cavernous appearance of this installation be a reflection of the female body? Perhaps it’s a figurative and never ending birth canal, representing the infinite nature of maternity and its relentless role in perpetuating existence. Or is it a porthole to an altered state? The Twilight Zone could be just one step away.
Regardless of its meaning The Infinity Tube will be a spectacle. Starting from tonight it will come to life every night until the end of the Next Wave Festival. The opening is from 6pm this very night at Lily Blacks, 12-18 Meyers Place.
