Face your fears

Fall Off The Edge Of Your Seat

By Hannah Colless, 15 July 2011

That familiar prickle on the back of the neck; the temporary paralysis; the clenched jaw and tightness in the throat- we've all felt it. Fear is one of the most primitive and instinctual responses, embedded deep within all creatures, human or otherwise. And while humans have the intelligence to rationalise fear, this same intelligence also burdens us with imagination- and running wild is what imaginations do best.

The shared human experience of fear is the foundation for Pin Drop, a play which enjoyed a brief premiere season at Melbourne's Arts House last year, resulting in four Green Room Award nominations and one win, for Outstanding Production (Independent and Hybrid Performance).

We've all had a sneaky peek under our bed or behind the bedroom door, and everyone's mistaken a hat stand for a serial killer, or our reflection in the hallway mirror as a malicious intruder. Creator and performer, Tamar Saulwick, delves into the human subconscious to create an experience that will unite the audience and leave them breathless. Using a range of pre-recorded interviews of people aged six to ninety-two, intermingled with live voice, Pin Drop explores fear in a very personal way. The experience is tense and unnerving, yet comforting in the familiarity of this common and shared sensation.

Pin Drop runs 26 July- 7 August in the Beckett Theatre at The Malthouse.
