Sometimes your first is your best. Your first bike ride, your first kiss, or even your first draft. Believe in your work and it could end up in a gallery one day...
First Draft Gallery, now on Chalmers St, Surry Hills hosts an array of exhibitions, all unique and intriguing to the eye. On at the moment in Gallery 1 is an exhibition The Otherings by Helen Shelley and Karena Keys. Their works explore our existential qualities and how our belief systems, whether religious or just simple faith, affect our lives, shape our experiences and alter our orientation in the world. Exploring these thematic concerns through a physical lens, Shelley and Keys create objects that aspire an overarching meaning beyond their materiality, becoming vehicles of faith and worship.
In Gallery 3 Tye McBride counts the distance in km between the Earth to the Sun (149597870) evocating the vastness and paradoxically, the proximity of our knowledge of the world. Honing in on the interplay of childhood fictions, nature and the cosmos, delve into a world of grand proportions, a world not unlike your own.
First Draft is a stunning gallery, full of thought-provoking and spirit-swelling works. The current exhibitions will cease on 20th Feb but rest assured the next instalments are just as promising. Never doubt your work, the first draft can be your best work.
