In true Melbourne fashion, Neon Parc is located down an alleyway. The most culturally exciting parts of Melbourne always seem to emerge from somewhere beneath the surface, or opposite a car park in this case.
Established in 2006 by artist, Geoff Newton, and curator Tristian Koenig, Neon Parc is a solid part of Melbourne’s art scene. It has everything we love about small galleries- intriguing contemporary pieces from a range of artists, both up-and-comers and already-there-ers; great opening nights with beer filled eskies and the calloused hands of creative types grabbing at cups of wine; a few people who look like they were born in a gallery, a few who look like they’ve never been to a gallery, and plenty in between, all bundled together and having a damn fine time.
Neon Parc covers as many bases as possible, collaborating with non-profit organisations and other commercial galleries, as well as giving a helpful boost to many unrepresented artists. Newton and Koenig exhibit not only local but also international artists, keeping things diverse and interesting.
Neon Parc is more than just a small gallery in an alleyway- it reaches a lot further than that and presents a diverse range of artists. Nick Cave even curated an exhibition here once. Enough said.
