Open Up is a week of performance art at Kings Artist Run Initiative, where 11 artists will explore the relationship between mind and body- the physical and the spiritual.
For many people, the phrase 'performance art' conjures images of dark, underground art clubs and groups of people with assymetrical haircuts and thick-framed glasses reading too much into a hand gesture. Don't expect this from Open Up. Although I can't guarantee there'll be no assymetrical haircuts, there definitely won't be any pretention or skinny art snobs lurking in dark corners. It's an explorative exhibition where the artists have been given absolute freedom to work without constraints.
One of the 11 talented artists, Jessie Bullivant, thinks outside the box in her piece, by taking her performance outside the walls of the gallery. She questions the link between mind, body and technology through her live performance that only a few lucky people will get to witness.
Inside the gallery she will exhibit a poster, marked with a date, time and phone number, and those who call the mysterious number at the precise time will hear the sound of a mobile phone soaring off a bridge and sinking to the riverbed. We spend most of our lives attached to our phones, which have become an extension of our bodies, so losing a phone can be like having a part of yourself removed. Only a few lucky people will be able to get through on the phone, which makes it a sort of closed, elitist performance.
Kings Artist Run Initiative is a space that supports new artists, as well as providing a realm for established artists to create more experimental and daring works. Openings are always a relaxed affair to mingle over vino and share some creative contemplation.
