January 14th brought with it such a bittersweet taste - with the exciting, final season of Shakespeare By The Sea, and the untimely, and deeply saddening sudden death of its founder, artistic director and producer, Dr David Finalyson MacSwan. After announcing 2011 the final year of the annual treat of enjoying Shakespeare by Balmoral's tranquil surrounds, MacSwan unfortunately passed away. We are now left to enjoy his legacy of work, for the final time, after its wonderful 25 years of production.
If you have not had the opportunity to head down to Balmoral with a picnic rug, your family, friends, or just your fine self to indulge in some outdoor Shakespeare, then it's now or never. It's a unique experience that blends seamlessly with Sydney's balmy evenings, to produce not just sensory-tingling theatre, but also a relaxed, intimate approach to the finest works of our age.
This year they're doing A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Comedy Of Errors. Performances are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, until 6th March.
So let's show David one final hurrah and applaude his amazing work, passion and imprint on theatre, inside and out.
