Once upon a time letter writing was the only way to correspond with distant lovers, long lost relatives, or classmates who were out of earshot. Letters were well-planned, heartfelt and never contained words like LOL or OMG. In many ways it was a simpler time and now it's time to relive it.
Women of Letters is a monthly event that pays homage to the lost art of letter writing. Co-curated by writers Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire, these monthly afternoons are a unique celebration of both literary finesse and female talent, bringing together some of Melbourne's most accomplished writers, musicians, politicians and comedians.
The next event will be held on Sunday, February 27, at Thornbury Theatre. You will find a diverse concoction of guests, namely, former Premier of Victoria, Joan Kirner, journalist and broadcaster, Sian Prior, singer songwriter, Missy Higgins, film-maker Natalie Van Den Dungen and actor and performance artist, Maude Davey. Each of these ladies will be composing a letter entitled "Letter to My Turning Point."
And if that's not enough to grab you, you can also expect wine and a DJ set by the great Dan Luscombe of The Drones.
Ps. It's not just for the ladies. Men are more than welcome, whether it's the poetic and insightful writing that gets them there or just the thought of a room full of women.
