Seven Thousand Reasons To Get Off Your Arse

By Hannah Colless, 08 June 2010

Got a bad conscience? What better way to clear it than supporting environmental sustainability at Seven Thousand Oaks Festival of Art and Sustainability? Not too concerned about the environment? The art and entertainment might attract someone like you and maybe you’ll learn a thing or two while you’re there.

As the name spells out, this is a festival of art and (you guessed it) sustainability. Thank god for artists and their unwavering idealism and relentless consciences. Never averse to getting their hands dirty, they’re always keen to get out there, get amongst it and do something about this sticky environmental situation us Earthlings find ourselves in.

Seven Thousand Oaks Festival of Art and Sustainability (7KO Festival) spans from June 17 to July 24 with a varied program of visual art, music, education, public art and installation. These will pop up in various venues across Melbourne including Heide Sculpture Garden, Guildford Gallery, The City Square, Donkey Wheel and Wimmera.

On June 20 Heide Sculpture Garden will hold a day of music, installations and sound walks, which will include a jumble of artists and makeshift instruments, such as a ruined piano, homemade instruments built from recycled materials and Philip Samartzis will be presenting his recordings from his trip to Antarctica. Now that's got to be spooky.

As a final gesture, 7KO Festival would kindly like to invite you on a camping trip. This trip, dubbed Plant Out, is a tree planting adventure from July 16-18. So pack your tent, your teddy, your beanie and pjs and hop on the free bus (yes FREE) to Moyston, a pretty little place not far from the Grampians, for a couple of days of wholesome fun. I know you’ve been talking about going camping for the past few years but have never gotten around to it. Who hasn’t? So here’s your chance to nab the free ride and go wild in the wilderness. It’ll be like band camp but with more trees and less trombones. Although I’m sure trombones are welcome.
