It is so refreshing to find a theatre that operates for art’s sake, instead of profits. The Red Rattler was opened by five queer women who drove themselves into debt by buying a quaint old factory in Marrickville and creating a creative performance playground. Applause, please, ladies and gentlemen. By addressing the need for a permanent community venue, Sydneysiders jumped on the bandwagon and massively supported these five party-starters. So what’s the party about?
The party is about a communally accepted creative space run by unpaid artists for performers, musicians, artists, designers, multi-media makers, experimentalists, film-makers, theorists, activists, collective organisers, and local punters. It’s fitted with a full PA, stage, LED lighting rig, projector and screen, licensed bar, two non-residential artist studios, and a rooftop garden.
It’s a fun, energetic scene for those of you who are looking for some entertainment that’s a bit left of centre and a delicious delight to the senses. Creating an inspiring reminder to artistic creators of what’s possible with passion, a dream and belief in Art on all levels.
