Tick all the boxes this summer

Sydney's (small) Xmas To-Dos

By Zoe Ferguson, 16 December 2010

For my final (small)Lust article of 2010, I thought I'd share my summer bucket list with Sydney readers, and if they so please, they could join me on my quest to tick boxes and fulfil bright, shiny Summer-lovin' dreams. Now, onto the to-do list:

First of all, I am jumping out of a plane 14,000 ft in the air strapped to someone's front. Fare thee well sanity, I won't be needing you for this one. Rest assured I'm not suicidal, but merely skydiving. Same thing? Really, sincerely and desperately hope not.

From this rush of adrenalin, I'll be slowing the pace of things down but definitely not quashing the amount of things to do. For an annual treat with family and/or friends, enjoy the Carols in the Domain on Saturday December 18th. In its 28th year, it's a pleasant way to get the Christmas cheer flowing.

Moving onto a more young-adult-wanting-something-without-parents-and-kids-around vibe, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is showing at the Slip Inn on December 21st. So that's...good. For such a bewildering and adoring film, all you need is a bright, colourful cocktail in hand to deal with it...or at least that's what I'll be telling myself.

On the 23rd I'll be headed to the Fish Markets as they'll be commencing their 24-hour trading before Christmas. If Carols didn't get you in the mood for Christmas, then the smell of fish surely will. If it doesn't you must be mad.

On December 30th one of my favourite 2010 bands will be playing in Enmore. She's talented, beautiful and a girl's best friend. Make sure you get to catch Marina and the Diamonds at the Factory Theatre.

If you've rushed past Sydney's laneway art thus far, then don't miss another beat. Take a leisurely stroll down some thin, long streets, as they transport you through a variety of artworks, all set to inspire and impress. Take the full tour of Laneway Art: Are You Looking At Me?

Of course it's self-evident but I have to say it - see the Sydney Festival and if you missed out on tickets, enjoy the First Night on January 8th and all the Free (with a capital F because they're that good) events. My Free Sydney Festival to-dos are Exposed: Photography & the Classical Nude (Jan 4-30th, Sydney Uni), Festival Inside Out: Sydney Dance Company & Australian Chamber Orchestra (Parramatta Jan 21st and Penrith Jan 23rd), Summer Sounds in The Domain: Los Lobos (Domain Jan 15th) and Symphony in The Domain: Midsummer Shakespeare (Domain Jan 22nd)

And to indulge my Shakespeare love affair, I'll be dabbling in some of the Sydney Shakespeare Festival. Dressed in costume of course...otherwise it's just not as fun.

Sydney always has a lot to offer, especially over Summer. So if the beach is your only destination, and cold beers are your only potion, then branch out and visit some of the exciting events on around the city.

With a (small) friendly hug, wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Zoe. See you in 2011!
