Spin me ‘round

The annual oeuvre of well-rounded talent

By Zoe Ferguson, 20 May 2011

Medium: Vinyl is Hardware Gallery's annual celebration of art, music and the vinyl record. Artists have been invited to paint, etch, print, sculpt onto a vinyl record, transforming a much loved and familiar disc of music into something visually wonderful, enticing a new realm of sensory pleasure.

Owner of Hardware Gallery, Lew Palaitis, is the man behind the Gallery’s full-blown, annual celebration of vinyl-inspired and vinyl-based art. It all started in 2009 when artists painted directly onto records. From Palaitis's perspective, it was a convenient way for him to liberate and breathe new life into all the awful records he'd "accidentally" accumulated. However this albeit refuted experience of one’s shabby record collection resulted in Medium: Vinyl’s wonderful collection of vinyl round paintings, stencils, etchings, printmaking, photography and sculpture from an impressive 200+ artists.

Even though vinyl sales account for not even one per cent of new music sales today, they’re back in so many other ways, and are being embraced by a younger demographic who are investing in their ‘trend’ appeal, and their great quirky canvas qualities.

Opening tonight, the exhibition runs until 11 June so don’t miss out, they’re sensational works by sensational people so go support them, and enjoy this unique opus.
