Ever wondered what fashion camp would look like, if there were such a thing? Wonder no longer- last night saw fashionistas piling onto buses (complete with sheep skin seat covers) en route to the Stolen Girlfriends Club show in Alexandria. Despite my first instincts, I didn’t start the impromptu sing along of school camp classics like ‘hail to the bus driver’ but instead relished a moment of comfort sans shoes and weighty bag.
Arriving at a giant warehouse, dimly lit by spotlights, I was bemused to find a runway covered in sand and Mark Hunter, aka The Cobra Snake, snapping away with his camera. After an anticipatory hush finally fell over the crowd, and the music began, cult model Talullah Morton opened the show for SGC. On trend styles were given an evil twist as models appeared as beautiful and damned- an army of very stylish undead. With hair adorned by feathers and printed bandanas, the collection took on a spiritual edge reminiscent of tribal graveyards and ancient native burials.
While I mostly preferred the men’s looks to the women’s- think grungy, oversized shirts and trench coats with leather backpacks- there were a few cute pieces for the ladies. Silk shorts with Western style linen shirts took charge, while tribal prints gave SGC a ritualistic aura, conjuring images of voodoo, drum beats and bonfires on moonlit beaches in the bewitching hours of the morning. SGC also reinvented some of their favourite winter pieces- turning leather to lace on the arms of denim jackets and jersey dresses.
