A hint of summer

Under The Wing collections preview

By Kat George, 05 May 2010

Between shows at Rosemount Australian Fashion week I went to visit Nicole Glavan at Under The Wing to find out what summer has in store...

Tina Kalivas

Personal favourite Tina Kalivas leaves me weak at the knees yet again. With strong, structural shapes and bold use of colour, Tina Kalivas creates pieces that are both wearable and sexy while remaining piercingly directional and experimental. I honestly couldn't pick a key piece from this collection, as each stands alone as a conceptual work of art, as does the Tina Kalivas label itself, a sartorial beacon in an often very commercial Australian market. This season Tina also produced a special tee-pee exclusively for Under The Wing using her graphic prints from the summer range.

Elke Kramer

Elke's unique resin based jewellery is as beautiful as ever. Progressing with every new collection, Elke incorporates different materials to produce covetable rings, necklaces and her signature hefty bangles. This season, Elke incorporates tassles and golden features to her work, maintaining her strong architectural aesthetic while adding an ethnic element to her thematic collection.

Lonely Hearts

The New Zealand label that keeps reinventing the 90s and our notions of the rebellious alterna-girl succeeds once again with a tennis themed collection of cute, easy to wear dresses, shorts, skirts and tops. I loved the teeny tiny leather shorts and their irreverent, witty take on the Lacoste crocodile symbol.

Birthday Suit

A relative newcomer the the Australian fashion industry, last summer Birthday Suit was hailed as the 'one to watch', and watch we did! Adding vibrancy and joy to fashion, Birthday Suit embrace colour and performance, and this season their own design prints (especially the bird of paradise) stand out as summer staples.
