Keep the noise up

A library with a new set of rules

By Zoe Ferguson, 22 September 2010

Forget the study, dump the books and most importantly ignore the old bat who keeps telling you to keep the noise down...because this library is different. For one, it has wine. And lots of it.

Woollahra's Wine Library ticks so many boxes, all of them being boxes labelled 'great drinks' 'great service' and 'great space'. Looks like libraries have finally become the place to go on a Friday night (without being branded a nerd of course).

The Wine Library literally has wall to wall lines of knowledge...not of the written word, but of delicious drops and fine vintages. If you close your eyes and randomly select a bottle from the wine list, although looking ridiculous, you would be satisfied with your choice. They're delicious, exciting and not bad for the ol' wallet either...leaving it substantially heavier than other establishments. If you're keen for a stronger sip than go for their also well-stocked spirit range. No cocktails I'm afraid, but if you want the spirits hard and fast, that's how they'll come...which no doubt is why Martinis are still available.

Ticking the boxes for a delicious and wide-range of wines and spirits, they also tick the box for scrumptious food. Focusing on provincial European home-cooked meals, the menu offers salumi platters, toast covered with tomato (Spanish style), macaroni cheese and meatballs in tomato sauce with crunchy, beautiful bread. If you're a breakfast person then keep in mind they're open for that as well, offering bocadillos (Spanish baguette) and eggs in the morning. Out the back there is a custom-built glass charcuterie case so you can enjoy looking at your desired meats before munching on them, or further in there is a private dining room so you two can have a moment by yourselves.

This 48-seat bar is small, cosy and intimate and fills up quick in the evenings so if you want a seat (or a place to stand and browse) in this library then get in early. Fancy seeing a line to get into a library...well worth it for this one though. Enjoy the new library experience, no borrowing cards required.
