A not so minor place

A Minor Place Leaves A Major Impression

By Hannah Colless, 30 June 2011

"I've been to a minor place and I can say I like its face." So say the lyrics of the Bonnie "Prince" Billy song, which is the namesake of the Brunswick cafe, A Minor Place. And I must agree with Bonnie "Prince" Billy on this one. I've been to A Minor Place too and I liked everything about its face, not to mention its food, its coffee and its humble, unmistakeably Australian aesthetic.

The cafe is set up in an old ramshackle house (once a local milkbar) on a suburban sidestreet of Brunswick. A rusted corrugated iron fence separates the cafe from the residence next door and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a clothesline out the back because there's a verandah out the front and I definitely saw at least one gum tree.

A Minor Place keeps things simple but it does simplicity with style. They serve all the regular dishes you'd hope for in a brunch-focused venue but it's the little twists that make these staples exceptional. The French toast is made with thick cut casalinga bread, the housemade muesli is topped with stewed seasonal fruit, honey, yoghurt and blackberry compote, pides are perfectly toasted to achieve that crunchy/fluffy combination and eggs are exclusively of the organic, free-range variety (not that anything else would be acceptable in Brunswick).

For an unassuming cafe hidden in a humble sidestreet on the northside, A Minor Place leaves a major impression.
