The three Barge brothers, Matthew, Chris and Tim, have created a restaurant and bar that's the beginning of King Cross' face lift. Previously an adult shop, LL Wine and Dine is an Asian-fusion delight in a class of its own. Nestled in the pedestrian-only Llankelly Place, it's a first glimpse of Sydney's real attempt at fashioning a Melbourne style laneway.
Chef Jingyi Kung makes sensational contemporary Asian cuisine; the fried tofu with black sesame and tahini sauce with snow pea sprout and seaweed and togarashi seasoning ($14) is deliciously fresh. For the meat-lovers, try the cumin and garlic-infused lamb fillet skewers with a tangy cashew nut, cucumber and mint raita ($19), and my favourite; the black tea and star anise smoked duck breast pancakes with house soy bean sauce and spring onion ($27).
For a drink, I especially enjoyed the chilli and coconut martini (chilli-infused 42 Below shaken with fresh coconut and coconut syrup, $16), but if you're a wine lover more than a cocktail experimentalist, try a wine from the list, which offers wines from Italy, New Zealand, Argentina, France and Australia.
Get into this new sensational addition to Sydney, and keep an eye on Llankelly Place - it'll soon be the new face of Sydney, full of funky cafes and drinking holes. But for now, two L's is all you have to know.
