Backgammon anyone?

Back into Back Bar- the Perfect Hideaway

By Hannah Colless, 06 May 2010

Back Bar is one of Melbourne's little secrets, playing hide and seek in a side street of Windsor. The Victorian décor is an image of bourgeois decadence, rousing thoughts of Oscar Wilde reclining by the fireplace, sipping on a tumbler of absinthe and musing over a game of Backgammon. This intimate bar is coated with plush carpet, wallpaper and velvety couches- all red-hued- which cast a soft rosé glow over the space. Adorned with intricate mirrors and gold-trimmings, Back Bar encourages its customers to relax into luxury.

This is perfect first-date territory. Firstly, no-one looks bad in rose-tinted lighting (there's a reason it's the chosen lighting scheme for brothels) and secondly, the collection of board games leaves no room for awkward silences. What's better to break the ice than a spot of Guess Who?

Perch at the bar and watch the cocktail masters whip up a glass of something between alcohol and art. Or wriggle into the comfiest corner of a couch by the open fire place and play footsies below a glass of merlot.

Back Bar is ideal for anything from quiet drinks to some not-so-quiet cocktails. 'The Parisian' and 'Le' Pink Bits' are just a couple of the tantalising, and somewhat provocative, cocktails to choose from. And to spoil you just a little bit more Back Bar has happy hour Tuesday to Saturday 5pm until 7pm and Sundays 5pm until 8pm. Now there's an excuse (not that you need one) to sample one of those deliciously decadent cocktails.
