If you've been feeling guilty for wanting a glass of wine as soon the end of work ticks 'round, then don't feel so bad - welcome back the 6pm swill and head to Darlinghurst's bar Love, Tilly Devine. What was a dank bottleshop storeroom has now been transformed into a trendy, small wine bar by the hands of sommelier Matt Swieboda and chef Tim Webber.
Named after the notorious crime boss Tilly Devine, the title suggests a dingy grog shop but what you're met with is a drinking den serving up a delicious range of beverages. It's small and gets packed quickly so make sure you get there early - they're open at 4pm and close at midnight so that's a good eight hours to brush up on your wine tasting...and drinking. Their wine list is long and treats wine lovers and beginners alike, with a whole section devoted to Riesling and if you're a red lover, try the Natural Selection Theory ‘Voice of the People' spring blend for $25 which is served in an old-school glass milk bottle...the best part in my opinion. But if you're not a wine drinker there are two types of cider and a couple of beers available, including Cooper's Pale and Moo Brew Heferweizen. The menu is simple and tasteful, its flavours complementing the wines, with antipasti and desserts to excite your pallate, however not to fill up your stomach.
Enjoy the early afternoon drinks and who knows...you might just find love in an alleyway...or laneway. Crown Lane that is. Bottoms up love birds!
