The Cafe Next Door

Been Around the Block

By Hannah Colless, 15 December 2010

Small Block has an understated charm, being housed in a red brick building at the quiet end of Lygon Street. You won't find city slickers or impatient foot tapping at this unassuming cafe, just humble service and relaxed patrons.

Much like the girl next door this cafe next door may not stand out at first glance but on closer inspection you realise it's worth a try and the more time you spend there the more in love you fall.

The menu is brunch based, perfect for a post-party hangover breakfast. Nourish yourself with the toasted bagel with seeded mustard, gruyere, asparagus, poached eggs and chilli jam, ricotta pancakes with saffron vanilla pear and barbados cream or the best housemade beans I've had in a long time, with creamy fetta swirled through.

Small Block also has an impressive bread selection to satisfy all your carbohydrate cravings. Choose from organic sourdough, pumpkin and polenta, gluten free or Norwegian rye.

You may think you've been around the block but until you try Small Block you ain't seen nothin' yet.
