Welcome to the new age wine bar. To your right you’ll see Sydney’s cityscape, to your left you’ll see an eclectic room full of mismatched furniture and lamps, hanging ferns and a wall dedicated to wine. But don’t worry, here the emphasis is on fun, not only your wine-tasting skills, so take a seat and let me indulge you.
The Winery by Gazebo does not see itself as a serious wine bar, but instead pitches itself as the place to go with close friends for a fabulous time in beautifully designed rooms, each one with their own vibe and personality.
Stepping into the main room is like walking into a garden party, with a whole wall of greenery, hanging ferns, and tables with European spiral chairs to match, it’s got a quirky ‘inside-outside’ feel to it. Tip-toe upstairs to a relaxingly chic living room with mismatched art deco lampshades, colourful couches and tables for two. For an uninhibited beautiful view of the city head out to the terrace or if you feel like a game of chess wander down to the Laneway, take a nibble out of Alice’s biscuit and shrink down to play chess with oversized pieces.
The wine list’s length shouldn’t be intimidating, they’ve kindly signposted categories with titles such as ‘slurpables’, ‘pink bits’ and my favourite ‘the unpronouncables’. Gazebo has flirtatiously made drinking wine quirky and fresh. For those who don’t adore wine, rest assured there’s always bubbles, spirits and cocktails. There’s a drink for everyone in this wonderland of a bar.
If you’re after a meal, both the mains and shared platters are delicious, but for a large group of you I’d recommend a few shared dishes including the fried squid with cucumber and mint salad ($18), the veal & chorizo sausage roll sliced with pear and green onion chutney ($18) or bump it up a notch with the West Aussie crab tossed with giant pasta shells, tomato, Sauvignon Blanc & chilli ($25.00).
So if you’re thirsty for a delicious drop, follow the white rabbit, and like Alice, you won’t want to leave this fantastical land.
