Crows Nest newbie is dancing up a storm

By Zoe Ferguson, 30 November 2011

After the arrival of Small Bar on Willoughby Road in Crows Nest, there's been a silence in the air of new bar names, let alone new small bar names. That was until Fox Trot trotted along and curled up on Falcon St, making a unique space its own with different rooms, aesthetics and moods.

Located on 28 Falcon St, this 6-month-old newbie is a delightful addition to the area. Albeit in a strange location whose pedestrian traffic is limited, this bar has its name on everyone's lips, and it sure isn't an empty, lonely bar.

Walking in through the double doors there's a 'study' room to your right, with a bookshelf with candles on every shelf and knick-knacks in the brick wall opposite, it instantly creates a quirky homely feeling.

Walk up the wide, swirling candlelit stairs and you're at the bar. With a beautifully painted mural opposite the bar, deer antlers on the wall and table numbers presented by playing cards, this bar instantly says ‘welcome to your new local’.

To the left of the bar there are astroturfed stairs leading up to the ‘garden’ section of the bar – up the stairs you’ll find a great space to enjoy fresh air, a quiet read or a cheeky cigarette. The entire floor is covered with astroturf and Victorian matching white tables and chairs offering their stylish comfort. There are vines with roses stretching around the perimeter and adjacent to the gorgeous wide, open window is another mural facing a grassy wall with ladders and a watering can.

Back downstairs and past the bar is the ‘sitting room’ area. There are plush lounges, mirrors, lamps and a more sophisticated space to repose and chat the night away in. The dim lighting adds a certain allure to the room, instantly seducing you as you walk in.

In terms of what you came for there are great beers and wines on offer and delicious cocktails - try the pomegranate concoction - bitter, sweet and strong. There are pizzas on the menu ($20 each) and nibble platters with cheeses, olives and garlic pizza.

The Fox Trot is a great bar, and offers a variety of spaces, moods and literature to indulge in. Both the actual kind of literature and the faux (the menus are stapled into books – another admirable quirk). So forget the Crows Nest Hotel (if you ever remembered it anyway) and make sure you head to this gorgeous new small bar.
