Bar Lourinhà may be positioned directly across from a multistorey car park but this doesn’t detract from its atmosphere at all. If anything, it enhances it as you recline on the cushions against the big bay window and watch the busy city-siders striding past. You feel like you’re part of an exclusive club. You’re on the inside looking out, cool jazz caressing your ears, Frangelico on your lips and palm fronds swaying in your peripheral vision. You’re in a world of your own here and there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.
The wall behind the bar is littered with memorabilia and souvenirs- glowing brass plates, ornate mirrors and a decorative spoon collection that would make your grandmother swoon. But there’s nothing cluttered about this space. It’s classy with a relaxed Spanish flair. Fresh flowers adorn the tables, pot plants bring the place to life and the music is perfectly pitched so you can still talk intimately over a glass of Spanish wine.
Graze the tapas menu and share plates of spiced saltbush lamb, slow-cooked, with jumbo couscous and labneh, or yellow tail Kingfish ‘pancetta’ and lemon oil. The wine list is as exotic as the menu and centres around a European selection, mainly Spanish and Italian but with some French, Portuguese and German wines thrown in for good measure. Then there are the cocktails (never forget the cocktails). ‘The Stolen Town Bike’ is a glorious mix of Frangelico, Amaro Lucano, gin, pomegranate juice and rose water. And tip out your holy water because the ‘Holy Mary Margharita’ will wash away your sins, combining Olmeca Resposado, Cointreau, watermelon and mint to heavenly perfection.
