Enlighten Your Day At Monk

By Hannah Colless, 16 November 2010

Hidden away in a car park off Carlisle Street in Balaclava Monk Bodhi Dharma could easily have remained a local’s secret, except for one problem- it’s too good to be kept a secret. People will gladly travel out of their way, across the city, just to get a taste of Monk. I should know because I’m one of those people.

Monk is characterized by its wholesome, sustainable food (mainly vegan) and its specialty coffee and tea. Their coffee is always smooth, rich, nutty and truly velvety. They roast their own on site as well as rotating coffees from other specialty coffee roasters.

On the food front you can expect a nourishing mix of vegetarian delights made predominantly from scratch. I love the Bircher muesli or house made muesli jam packed with seeds, nuts, and dried figs and topped with thick, creamy yoghurt. You won't find any eggs or bacon here but their back to basics attitude, focusing on grains, veggies, fruit, beans and legumes will have you forgetting all about meat. They avoid any processed food and are so passionate about keeping it natural and simple that they don't have a microwave and use the gas stove only.

The stripped back, converted warehouse atmosphere of Monk is reminiscent of many Melbourne cafe’s but that doesn’t mean Monk is unoriginal. In fact, it's anything but and with coffee like that it's safe to say I've found my following.
