Shop. Revive. Survive.

Have a Break, Have a Coffee at Kawa

By Hannah Colless, 10 June 2010

I’ve always seen Kawa Café as a kind of rest stop. It cures fatigue in the middle of a very thorough vintage-shopping marathon along Crown Street. Shop, revive, survive, I always say. And unlike those rest stops along the highway, there’s not a Kit Kat or cup of muddy instant coffee in sight at this cafe.

Being in the heart of Crown Street makes Kawa a people-watching paradise, as you sit at one of the dainty wrought iron tables on the sun drenched footpath and rest your weary legs, or lounge inside at a long timber table facing the glass shop front.

A big blackboard on the wall as you enter is scribbled with tasty edible options. The indecisive among you should beware; the choice is not easy and is not made any easier by the glass-fronted counter brimming with homemade cakes, cookies and pies.

Kawa prides itself on its fresh, organic produce and is famous for its free range organic chicken meatballs, ideal in a sandwich or a salad but best of all in your mouth. The breakfast options are just as desirable, with big breakfasts and a tempting choice of sides. I’m particularly partial to the sheep’s milk fetta.

Oh and one of the best things about Kawa Café is that you can get half-serve sandwiches. It’s the perfect pick you up without weighing you down so you can continue on your merry shopping way without falling into a food coma. Ah, life’s tough.
