What makes a day all the much better is a bit of awkwardness. The not-so-subtle-that-no-one-saw-but-subtle-enough-that-no-one-helps foot trip-up on flat ground. Awkward. The forgetting of words to your ‘favourite’ song halfway through the second line. Awkward. And of course the green-spinach-looking-substance inbetween your teeth when you smile at a cute stranger. Even though you had a meat-pie for lunch. Go figure.
But these are the awkward moments that a young man ‘Fuzz’ adores and believes brings people closer. And he isn’t wrong.
If you’re a Darlinghurst Road local or avid bar seeker, you may have noticed a fresh new face smiling at passersby. This new face is Awkward and proud of it.
Fuzz Ali, owner and CEO (Chief Entertainment Officer) has created a new bar and it’s an Awkward wonderland. With blown-up images that cover the front window (that change every 6 months), Clinton and Hillary’s faces smiling from the bathroom doors and a gnome stool creating a 'I'm not too old for this' optical gag, this bar soon became this reviewer’s new fave.
With a creative ethos at its heart, Awkward’s mission is to enlighten, support and entertain artists and the public alike. Fuzz, being a creative soul himself, has his finger on the Sydney scene’s pulse. With Frenchie Tuesdays where the bartenders take control and turn awkward things French, and a bi-annual facelift which allows artists to rethink the space and create a whole new guise, Fuzz endeavours to allow patrons to experience something new, transformative and of course, a little bit awkward.
It’s bigger than a small bar but still plays host to the small bar qualities in that you can hang out all night in your own space (whether at the front with the flamingos or out the back in the 'jungle' room) and you can drink without having to order food. But if you do, their nibbles are delicious. Oh and don't expect to get great descriptions - all of them are quotes, deliciously coupled with the titles. Their wine list is composed by a fine gentleman named Stewart who knows what your palate wants before you do and the cocktails are shaken by the divine Frenchie, Morgan, who can knock you up a killer Hung Mule (my fave cocktail, give it a go. Its vodka-cointreau-mint water-ginger-bitter-soda mix is addictive to say the least!)
It's fun, quirky and is already making ripples (if not a splash). So check it out, take a friend, sit on a gnome and get Awkward. Just how a fun life should be.
