Jamie Woolcott's cafe Little Ethel's is as gorgeous and charming as himself - full of colour, substance and fake grass. Yep, he's all about the astroturf and you can too if you frolic in Ethel's garden for breakfast, lunch or tea.
Little Ethel's, an espresso bar and deli (which also caters) is adorably retro - its 1970s decor creates a nostalgic comfortable air, with deck chairs, colourful outdoor tables and scattered nicknacks. It's intimate with only four tables but that makes the already great service that much more personal. Its quirky charm is coloured with warm browns married with burnt oranges, gnomes on the grass amongst the picket fence and the mismatched picture frames on the wall, next to the birds escaping the birdcage.
But apart from its adorable setting, Ethel's has a fantastic menu - it's short and sweet but it's always fresh, delicious and full of flavour...and so reasonable too. $8-$10 can get you eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, ricotta, avacado on toast or housemade muesli, or bruschetta. If you can't decide which toast you want, you can get the Toasting Plate, which comes with three types of toast (fruit, banana, sourdough, etc) which you can choose or let the chef decide for you. But make sure you try the Passionfruit Butter...it's so delicious you'll want to take a jar home of it. As for the coffee it's top-standard and fantastically made...and always with a smile too.
With his suspenders, two-tone shoes and unpretentious attitude, Jamie has done his grandma proud with this gorgeous cafe being named after her. Little Ethel's is a hit, and you'll be missing out if you didn't make a visit...or at least a little play on the grass.
