Perch Amongst The Leaves

By Hannah Colless, 06 March 2011

When looking for this bar the only clue is a red birdcage hanging above a black door. But once you ascend the long staircase you’ll kick yourself that you never knew it was there.

The Red Hummingbird has two levels to accommodate you. The first, a moody and romantic den with Moroccan-style light fittings, dark wood furniture, flickering tea-light candles and wallpaper with hundreds of hovering hummingbirds.Upstairs you’ll find a huge rooftop terrace, which is like stepping into a holiday with its timber decking and hanging basket chairs that beg you to sit in them. Two large trees, conveniently positioned on Russel Street, flutter their leaves in hypnotic distraction from the looming skyscrapers above you.

Hummingbirds are impressive little creatures. They have the unique ability to fly upside down, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the bartenders at this inner-city dwelling could whip something up while standing on their heads as well. To them cocktail making is an art form, a passion and a lifestyle and this is clear when you flip through the extensive drink menu, which reads like a novel.

The Red Hummingbird is peaceful for a late afternoon drink but by sundown it will be elbow-to-elbow, champagne flowing and cocktail shakers shaking.
