A classy affair

Polly want a cocktail

By Jo Power, 19 July 2010

There’s no shortage of bars, pubs, and lounges on Brunswick Street, but there’s only one place you can hang around on marble benches and smoke a cigar while admiring potted ferns and gold statues of goddesses—and that’s just the courtyard. The place of which I speak is Polly, a cocktail lounge and decadent haven for those that crave the finer things.

The cocktail menu is the main attraction. If you like a savoury mix, try their take on a classic, the Bloody Polly (beetroot vodka, Aperol, wasabi, basil, mint, lime, and coriander). Or, if you like your cocktails to taste less like dinner and more like dessert, try their sweetest concoction, the Sticky Kitten (a golden, honey martini, laced with Dom Benedictine and finished with Media Polish honey vodka and a splash of butterscotch).

The sideshows are the cigars and the Seven Deadly Sin shooters. The cigar menu offers a choice of ten cigars with alluring descriptions of each. But if phrases like “hint of spice” and “cult following” aren’t enough, the staff are very knowledgeable and will undoubtedly be able to answer all your questions or make excellent recommendations. The Seven Deadly Sin shooters are seven cocktail shots named after the infamous capital offenses: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Lust. Envy is the greenest, Gluttony is the creamiest, and Lust is the sweetest, which all make sense to me.

Inside, Polly is exquisite. It seems the entire place is swathed in vintage upholstery and velvet, and all surfaces are marble. It’s dim, lit only by a crystal chandelier above the bar and lamps with tassel-trimmed shades. Gather your friends and lounge about with drinks like you’re in a rich man’s lounge room in the olden days, then retire to the courtyard for cigars.
