Seek Out Berta's Hideout

By Zoe Ferguson, 14 February 2011

Off Wentworth Avenue lies an alleyway and tucked neatly, discreetly, verging on hidden, within that alleyway is a seductive, alluring and addictive concrete heaven. There you'll find Italian delicacies, exclusive white and red wines and a room full of excited and satisfied patrons. This dimly-lit urban sanctuary is non other than Berta - and Sydney, you need a lot more establishments like it.

Vini owner and chef Andrew Cibej has effortlessly created another gem. Berta's industrial feel, underground atmosphere and same quality Italian fare of produce and culinary delights, you'll find yourself coming here more and more.

Personally, I think Berta's perfect for its range of diverse dishes, unique flavours and textures, perfect to order all together with a friend or two and share and care. Get the deep fried cauliflower and chickpeas with leaves of crisp rosemary are great with a beer while the radicchio, pan fried with sugna (little nibs of rendered, whipped pork fat with fennel seed) are delicious with a more refined beverage, such as a red wine to compliment the caramelised red wine vinegar that gratefully lift the bitter greens. The braised green lentils with leeks and chicory are divine, along with the slices of pan fried lamb rump with white bean mash and salsa verde.

Their desserts are also scrumptuous (the sorbet, the tart, the baked chestnut custard...yummm) and with their all-Italian wine list, you can't take a wrong step...unless you keep walking past the front door...in which case you don't know what you're missing. Well, now you do...jealous, much?
