Brunswick Street is a popular destination for hungry people. With nearly 100 eateries lining the street, it’s just a matter of figuring out what you feel like filling your tummy with. If you feel like a medley of perfectly prepared tapas and exceptional Spanish wine, search no further than De Los Santos.
Their tapas menu offers a moderate range of dishes; enough to make choosing difficult and exciting, but not enough to overwhelm you. Four dishes can adequately feed two people, but five or six wouldn’t be out of the question if you’re in it for the long haul—especially if you accompany your choices with one of De Los Santos’ carefully selected Spanish wines. One of the best and most popular drops is the Torres Coronas Tempranillo from Penedes, Spain, which is impossibly light and magically complementary to the food.
This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the paella section of the menu. There are three to choose from (I recommend the chicken, chorizo, and lamb option), and they must be shared (minimum two people @ $26.00 a person). They take 45 minutes to make, but when your waiter places a big pan of steaming paella in the middle of the table and you take your first bite, the anticipation will seem a small price to pay for something so glorious (not exaggerating).
Tapas-style dining has become something of a sensation in Melbourne, but it’s often done with either laziness or a misguided modern twist. De Los Santos prepares authentic Spanish cuisine of a high calibre without getting too fancy and confusing—if you love tapas and don’t have enough money to jet to Spain, Brunswick Street is just a hop and a skip away.
