Berlin Bar is appropriately hidden down Corrs Lane, through a modestly marked doorway and up a quiet staircase that makes you question if you’re in the right place. That’s until you reach the images of Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator, which line the walls near the top of the stairs. Thus begins the theme of the once war-torn and completely divided city of Berlin. When you arrive at the summit you are faced with a closed door, a doorbell and a plaque, which reads, “Welcome to Berlin. Have your passports and papers ready.” From here the exclusivity of this place is clear. After ringing the doorbell a pair of eyes appear through a slit in the door, assess what they see, and upon approval the door is opened.
The bar is split in two sections- West Berlin and East Berlin. West Berlin is luxurious, opulent and excessive but East Berlin has the heart, the atmosphere and actual beds with big comfy pillows to snuggle up on. Where else can you have cocktails delivered to you in bed? Upgrade to a top bunk if you want to share some secrets with an ally out of reach of prying ears and eyes, or if you want to cosy up with a long lost lover. But remember; although you may be in bed you are not in a bedroom so keep your bratwurst in your pants, Soldier.
Berlin Bar is not a loud, cheap, beer on tap type of bar. Getting smashed on spare change is not their style. It’s like a restaurant dedicated solely to alcohol, with table service and all, and coming here without sampling their goods would be like going to a nice restaurant, occupying a whole table and only ordering tap water.
Once you see the cocktail list there’ll be no stopping you. You’d betray your friends just for one sip of the Aviation Fizz, East Berlin, West Berlin or Checkpoint Charlie. I’d do worse just to get my hands on my indisputable favourite- the 20th Century. This luscious cocktail is fresh and clean yet creamy and rich. It combines gin, white chocolate liquor and fresh limejuice and is served up in a chilled martini glass then finished with lime oil.
Fom the parlour-esque white leather Ottoman seating of the West, to the ammunition cases, graffiti-scrawled walls and converted bathtub tables of the East, Berlin Bar will transport you to another world. But as you are choosing sides, don't let it tear you apart.
