Yes Sir, Yes Sir, Three Bags Full

By Hannah Colless, 10 May 2011

My first visit to Three Bags Full came recently when I had an out of town friend visiting. Being from Byron Bay, the land of cafes, she knows good coffee but I wanted to show her a whole new standard of coffee making. It’s a standard upheld by a number of elite coffee houses in Melbourne and Three Bags Full is undeniably one of those elite.

I'd heard many people raving about Three Bags Full and upon arrival I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. There's an aesthetic that's distinctive to Melbourne's standout cafes. Think St. Ali, Auction Rooms and Seven Seeds. All these coffee-crazed venues have a similar stripped back, warehouse style, with quirky bits and pieces to liven up the place. At Three Bags Full old road signs have been creatively turned into seats and upside down tea cups and saucers make for some cute light fittings.

The menu is conveniently categorised, with a number of different headings- Eggs, Savoury, Sweet Tooth, Vegetarian, Oats, and Toast. Since every meal sounds as appealing as the next the well organised lay out makes the process of elimination much less gruelling. I decided to opt for an avocado hit, going for the smashed avocado with toasted pepitas, fetta on toast with a wedge of tangy lemon. The helping of avocado was so generous I could barely finish it- a much preferable dilemma than a breakfast skint in avo. But if that's not your cup of tea, the parmesan eggs might take your fancy. They're a delicious mix of poached eggs (free-range, of course) on organic sourdough with prosciutto, parmesan and truffle oil.

Although the café was brimming with hungry Sunday brunch-goers there were enough staff to keep things flowing and the wait for a table was a mere few minutes, in which we were able to get our coffee orders coming along. And speaking of coffee, Three Bags Full, really knows its stuff. You can choose between single origin, filter roasts or their nutty house blend, which my out of town companion claimed was "the best coffee I've ever had." Need I say more?
