Get Domesticated

Cook, Clean, Pamper and Rock It

By Zoe Ferguson, 06 September 2010

They're a seven-piece band with more groove and delicious sounds than...well, alot of us. If you haven't heard them or seen their wild shows live, then you really are missing out on something special. They fill the room with electricity, soul and an overwhelming urge to dance. They're a must-see band. They're The Domestics. Wil Eastley, the frontman of the band, speaks to Zoe Ferguson about becoming domestic.

When and how did you guys start The Domestics?
The Domestics began in 2006 at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts as a four member Jam band. It then grew over time with more members gradually being accepted into the band. In the end each member started bringing new ideas and songs were eventually written.

What inspired you to create the band?
We all share a collective passion for diverse and eclectic music styles. As a band we draw a lot of inspiration from bands and musicians that evolved over time and produced exciting and different music. I think that element and our love for music and playing live were the reason why the band began.

How would you describe your sound to those who are yet to experience it?
It’s big and a whole lot of fun. It’s not stagnant nor does it inspire shoe-gazing. It’s Funk, Rock, Folk, Ska and a number of other genres smacked together. All and all it’s colourful and expansive.

What do you feel is most important about playing to audiences, and why?
There is something special about live experiences. If done right and often it is a powerful and exuberant way of communication. In a live setting you have the opportunity to sway moods, bodies and be as much a part of one’s night as their friends, significant other or drink. I think that the most important thing is that generation of ecstatic fun and when it’s shared between performer and audience it makes for a great time.

What are The Domestics getting up to now and what’s up next?
We are currently in the process of writing another set, and working on some new sounds. In October we are headlining the Saturday night at the Manly Jazz festival and will be off touring the Hunter Valley and Newcastle. Currently plans are in the works to tour regionally and interstate over Spring and Summer.

When you all put your instruments down, where are your favourite places to go in Sydney?

Cafe: Citrus in Newtown
Bar:  Pocket Bar in Darlinghurst
Venue:  The Basement in Circular Quay
