Meet the dreamy, eclectic and fun band in town, Richard In Your Mind, playing in heads near you now. Zoe Ferguson has a chat with band member Conrad about how their sound came to be.
Where did you meet and start Richard in Your Mind?
Richard and I met towards the end of high school and bonded over our love for Beck, Ween, 90s hip-hop and getting toasted. Later, I moved into Richard’s house and we started making music togeter. Our first venture, The Sex Doodles, was a fun psychedelic folk duo but we soon wanted to expand into a full band. Then Richard In Your Mind was born.
What influenced and inspired Richard's beginning?
We loved The Sex Doodles, but as you can probably guess, it was a bit silly. We thought we were like Ween but we were probably more like Tenacious D or something. So Richard In Your Mind was our attempt at a ‘serious’ band.
What do you think is most important about your music?
We like to experiment with sounds. Bleeps, blips, whooshes, swishes, crashes, bangs, pops, that sorta stuff but also make good songs. Combining nice melodies and lyrics with some cool sounds. We generally see each song as its own little world and try to use the right sounds to make that world a sweet place to inhabit.
What’s happening now with the band and what’s on the horizon?
We just released our second album My Volcano in July, and are currently wrapping up a little tour in support of that. The horizon sees more shows, a couple of festivals and maybe even another release quite soon.
