An exclusive club for the bookish indeed—Book Club celebrates the dapper man but gives him a little street edge that makes him loveably cheeky and boyish. Colourful yet refined, Book Club’s simple, mature designs pair tailoring with all the most wonderful things about being a boy—wit, easy style and great shirts. The brilliant creative minds behind Book Club—Simon Gibson and Serge Bodilovic—just made the Eastern sea-change, leaving Melbourne for Sydney in a coastal cruise that reads like a salty breeze in the sunset colours of their AW collection.
Who are you and what do you do?
Simon Gibson (24) and Serge Bodulovic (25) among other things we run a menswear label called Book Club.
How did you come to be in fashion design?
We both studied courses completely unrelated to fashion at Australian National University. The creative scene in Canberra is really amazing but quite small, our paths inevitably crossed. We had similar interests and taste we decided to work together making some jeans for friends and local boutiques, it went better than expected and we just kept going.
Tell us what the future holds for you...
We are going to keep working on concise collections for Book Club, and we have a really exciting collaboration that is in the works as well. We are also working on joint and individual side projects which will keep us busy.
What's…
… your favourite place to shop in Sydney?
Places with nice people behind the counter. Surly shop people are the worst.
... the best winter fashion trend?
Parkas
... the best coffee in Sydney?
Sonoma in Glebe Pt Road. Their breakfast roll is also off the charts in deliciousness.
... the best place to eat in Sydney?
The creatively titled Chinese Noodle Restaurant in Chinatown has incredible dumplings and noodles and hands-down the best decor in Sydney.
… your favourite Sydney gallery space?
Sadly Monster Children has just shut up shop, Art Space in Woolloomooloo is really great though.
... the ultimate night out in Sydney?
A few drinks at a friend’s house, onto a good gig, move to good house party/pub/bar followed by a burrito. You can always judge a night by whether or not a quotable quote comes from it, if there is a really good quote, it is a good night. Serge also will let people know midway through a good night that it is good by telling them we are "making memories".
... your favourite new Sydney band?
We live in Sydney now, but our favourite bands are still Canberran. The Fighting League, TV Colours, Assassins 88, Danger Beach (any band on Dream Damage) are the best bands in Australia. Some have moved to Melbourne, but they are still Canberrans at heart.
