You could describe Josh Hardy as an entrepreneur, but that word doesn’t really do sweet justice to his accomplishments. Is there a word that sums up a guy who helps man one of Brunswick’s most interesting new venues, found near-instant success with his own graphic design and marketing business, brings something extra-special to every musical project he lends his talent to and was peer-pressured into picking a favourite colour? Nah, there isn’t – so maybe you should just keep reading.
1. When people ask you what you ‘do’, what do you say?
I usually just say I have a design and marketing business that focuses on websites and digital marketing. But it depends who I’m talking to and what would be most relevant to them and the conversation. If they’re in hospitality I talk about Phoenix, Agraba (another bar/restaurant I helped set up and Godel did branding, web and PR work), and Chin Chin (we help them with music curation). If they’re a musician I talk about Dreamers or Krissy.
2. What’s one thing you’d really like to add to your repertoire and why?
One day I’d like to take all that I’ve learnt about music, business and marketing (especially digital) and combine it into one pursuit/business. Not sure what form it would take, it’s hard to say because the music industry is changing so rapidly.
3. Why should people hang at Phoenix Public House?
A few reasons – we have amazing, interesting cheap food, great drinks, Melbourne’s best band booker and a great band room, DJs that play vinyl in the dining room, HOPSCOTCH (soon), plus really, really good looking staff. It’s relaxed without being boho, stylish without being uncomfortable.
4. Besides Phoenix, where’s your favourite Melbourne spot?
I live in Carlton North, so I find myself at Gerald’s Bar in Rathdowne Village a bit. They take drinking really seriously, without being wanky. Plus it’s just a beautiful bar.
5. Sum up the following words in relation to your life:
Monday: I don’t care if Monday’s blue
Tuesday: Tuesday’s grey
Wednesday: and Wednesday too
Thursday: I don’t care about you
Friday: It’s Friday, I’m in love
Saturday… wait
Sunday: always comes too late
