How did you get into djing?
I have been singing/writing/performing all my life and have dabbled in everything from fronting Swing/Jazz/rock/electronic bands, being signed to Sony at fourteen (as part of a girl group - I kid you not!), children's shows, musicals, TV commercials, voice overs and now recently djing. I was originally taught how to DJ back when I was seventeen and at the same time I was first introduced to electronic music. I come from a creative/musical household (my dad runs a studio) but I would listen to The Beatles, 10CC, Sheryl Crow and No Doubt, so parties such as Mad Racket really opened me up to a whole side of electronic music that I never thought I would understand or enjoy.
What's happening now? Are there any special projects on the horizon?
I play at various clubs/bars around Sydney as LE SISTER and when I'm not recovering from the lack of a regular sleep pattern I am in the studio working on a new project with my band. It's a project made up of myself and (genius) producer Mike Ross. It's pretty electronic based but we just finished tracking some live drums so I'm excited to hear it all coming together so we can start gigging come summer 2010/11. I also run a blog (who doesn't eh?!) so you can keep an eye out for music/videos and more info to come in the near future: lesister.blogspot.com
What's...
... your favourite place to shop in Melbourne/Sydney?
I may be slightly biased but I always have a soft spot for Alpha60. Besides that I struggle to find room in my wardrobe for various opp-shop or random finds.
... the trend to watch for winter?
I played at Good Vibrations this year in the Sportsgirl tent and I kind of love what they are doing at the moment - collaborations with Australian designers, music and events in general (and wedge boots!). I don't watch TV and try to avoid magazines etc so have no idea about trends to watch. I am sure if there was one I wouldn't be able to afford that so called 'trend' or most probably wouldn't really give a damn.
... your favourite Sydney restaurant?
I'm always up for Love Supreme on Oxford Street in Paddington (or pizza in general!) or Chat Thai in china town if you can handle the wait, but my favourite place to eat is at my house with a glass of wine, or two, or three...
... the best place to take out-of-towners?
The most fun I have had recently was spent driving up the coast, finding a crazy little motel, then going swimming and chilling out in Port Stephens. That or randomly finding myself dancing to salsa music at a club (I still don't know which one it was!) late one night in Kings Cross with two close friends. I can't wait to see some good live shows later this year and have a dance... LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip will definitely be on the cards. I saw Animal Collective with my brother Andrew/Lance Peters (skate/everything photographer - he puts me to shame) and we danced like crazy, but so much of the crowd just stood there for most of the set! I think if people danced more in their lives they'd probably be happier. Try it.
... your pick of rising artists to watch?
Brett Chan does mural/painting/video art and he recently shot a video for a song of mine (it's on my blog). I have no idea what he plans on doing next creatively but I am sure that it's bound to not disappoint.
