Fashion Under The Wing

Nicole Takes Fashion Under The Wing

By Kat George, 20 April 2010

At only 25 years old Nicole Glavan is leading Australian and New Zealand fashion into the future with her PR agency, Under The Wing.

How did you start Under The Wing?

Sussan (my business partner) and I met through work a few years ago. It was when we both found ourselves between jobs that we made the decision to start our own agency over a coffee one afternoon. It happened rather quickly and with a lot of naivety, but really deep down we had some serious goals and motivation, and truly couldn’t have imagined doing anything else at the time. We are so incredibly proud of and we have always believed one hundred percent in what they bring to fashion.

What's going on at UTW and what's on the horizon?

We’re growing really fast! We’ve just moved into a new space  and we’re watching our designers grow and mature– it’s incredibly satisfying. We’ve just taken on some new designers we are really excited about– particularly Carly Hunter, who is really special. Watch out for her!

What’s…

… the best place to shop in Sydney?

Prettydog in Newtown – Tanya has the best labels from Australia and New Zealand to offer, including Deadly Ponies, Mania Mania, Lonely Hearts, Karen Walker, Lover - plus amazing internationals like Future Classics you can’t find anywhere else because no one else is cool enough to know to carry them. Tanya is amazing!

… the trend to watch for winter?

I’m calling it rebellious prep! Box pleats, clever pastel knitwear ala Lonely Hearts, creepers and backpacks.

… your favourite up and coming Sydney designer?

Birthday Suit – they are incredible and you’re going to be blown away when you see their S/S 11. It’s absolutely spectacular.

… the best food in Sydney?

Tiger Mottle cafe in Paddington do the best Bubble & Squeak I have ever had in my life. You also need to try the mushrooms on toast with sage and ricotta. I’m all about breakfast – the best meal of the day

… the ideal night out in Sydney for out-of-towners?

The ‘Shit Sydney’ pub crawl, brainwave of my friend Alex Griggs. Spit in the eye of the small bar revolution and celebrate all things shit and awesome about Sydney with a pub crawl along one of its most decrepit stretches of urbane crapness, Parramatta Rd. Start at the Lewisham Hotel, and move on to old men singing Ricky Martin karaoke at the Royale Lounge and finally end at the Stanmore McDonalds to eat an OctaCheeseburger (that’s eight cheeseburgers squashed together) feeling really sorry for yourself.
