Are you an innocent, well-mannered, quiet, psychotic, ambitious, filthy-minded, sensitive, compulsive, absurd, chaotic, generous, obsessive, charming individual? Or maybe you just really like Comme des Garcons and gladiator helmets? Whether you fall into one or all of the above categories, new Sydney menswear boutique Chiodo is your go-to guy. And note the emphasis on “individual” in the store’s self-description — it just wouldn’t be fair for such stylish garb to be reserved purely for the gents.
One of the most stylish linchpins in Melbourne’s menswear scene for 15 years, Chiodo has finally opened its doors inside a spacious white terrace on Potts Point’s Challis Avenue. Just like its older and harder-to-locate brother, a sparsely decorated store hidden — in true Melbourne fashion — in a basement, the store will see its in-house label being stocked alongside some very reputable menswear labels. Besides Comme there’s Junya Watanabe, Julius, James Perse Basics and Martin Margiela, plus Cutler & Gross sunnies, Officeline leatherwear and man-undies by The White Briefs to complete the, err, package.
The store’s eponymous line holds its own against the big names it sits besides, putting a cheeky spin on stylish, well-cut menswear. You know that irritatingly stylish best friend you have who can make something that sounds obnoxious look totally cool and creative? Like embroidering an army-style khaki shirt in pink tulips, wearing a classic business shirt inside out or furnishing his bedroom in old surgical tables and spray-painted garden gnomes? That’s the kind of guy Chiodo is.
If you thought women lost the sartorial war when Meanwhile opened its doors back in April, you’ll have your suspicions confirmed after visiting Chiodo. Guys — get to Potts Point and claim your spoils. Ladies — don’t even think about trying to sneak these threads out of your boyfriend/husband/best guy friend’s closet. Such actions are not likely to go unnoticed.
