I love Above. We all love Above. Above is a Melbourne institution— like the tram or the humble latte—Above is quintessentially Melbournian in its references. Intellectual design and deconstructed silhouettes inform Above’s aesthetic, will bursts of colour dancing with soft creams and steely greys.
For AW11, Above have eaten the proverbial mushroom and gained another level. Growing in leaps and bounds the iconic design team—Kerry Findlow and Nyssa Marrow—have taken their passion for celebrating the female form and challenging preconceptions to new heights of (for want of a better word) awesomeness. Revisiting the devore print of SS10-11 and injecting the collection with vibrant shades of orange, the dynamic duo have proven once and for all that they’re a fashion force to be reckoned with.
To coincide with the collections imminent arrival in stores nation wide, Above has produced a video in collaboration with rising stars Adam Murfet and Jessie Oldfield. Taking elements of sight, sound and movement, the video, aptly entitled ‘Level’, is an ode to the layering of time and the inherent nature of compiling moments to create one, cataclysmic, frenetic experience. As Above-clad dancers shake, pop and create various sounds—which, alone, are as gorgeous and defining as they are when combined—we’re reminded that the little nonentities that make up a story are just as important as the finale.
