Aesthetic Endurance: Dannika Zen

By Ingrid Kesa, 15 February 2011

Dannika Zen is an exciting new Sydney label, embracing quality and timelessness.

In line with the label’s design theory, ephemeral trends are abandoned in favour of sustainable style. This is achieved through the use of the best quality materials and subtle amendments to classic design. The result is staple pieces made to last, to grow over time with the wearer, intended to develop their own idiosyncrasies to mirror our own. This idea of longevity is particularly appealing when so many products are carelessly manufactured to be disposable or conform with flash in the pan trends.

The current collection, Voyages, is small but endearing, harking back to the mantra quality over quantity. Manufactured in Australia and Indonesia, and with materials carefully sourced from around the world, every piece is lovingly handmade. Each knitwear garment, for example, involves the dedicated hands of four craftsmen, and takes three to four days to complete.

Among other basics, footwear is found. The Road boots are truly made for walking, fusing comfort and aesthetics in a classic suede ankle boot with a wooden heel. This concern for functionality carries over to the bags, which are big enough to house all necessities as well as luxuries. In what is perhaps a nod to Proenza Schouler’s PS1 satchel-style bags, Dannika Zen’s Prenzlauer bag is a cult-classic in the making.

Dannika Zen has just finished filming a short of the Voyages product range, which is available exclusively to view here.
