Captains of Industry redefine Melbourne men

By Jessica Hopcraft, 18 May 2010

Forget the strategically hungover looking boys of Melbourne-there's a revolution happening in our streets. Strutting about with neat hair and the confidence of Mad Men's smoking babes, the gentleman is back. Popping up are tailored jackets, well tied ties and cuffed trousers revealing the perfect pair of shoes. If only there was a place one could go to purchase the effortlessly stylish items these men are adorning. Perhaps even over a coffee? Enter, Captains of Industry.

A perfect mixed business space nestled up some appropriately rustic looking wooden stairs. Vintage bikes, handmade shoes and suits, a classic hairdresser and food to delight all tastes. The decor is sublimely masculine and painfully easy on the eye. Set up by James Roberts and Thom Grogan, Captains tips its hat to old school sophistication in a genuine and thoughtful way. The coffee brewed by James (a seasoned Melbourne barrista) meets and exceeds our painfully high Melbourne standards- he is also the man to see for a pair of suave quality leather shoes.

Thom's tailoring company Statler & Waldorf creates menswear that fits with a purpose. With clean lines and vintage inspiration, top it off with a superb hairdo from Herr Blick and you'll be owning the streets with the best of them. Captains feels like a step back in time but with the friendly familiarity that only comes with Melbourne's truly great cafes. And I must stress fellow females, do not be discouraged by the male slant on things because sitting by the window people watching, with an olive and chorizo toasted sandwich and a perfect flat white is what afternoons in this city are made for. Plus the dapper eye candy doesn't hurt.
