Castaway By Something Else

By Ingrid Kesa, 06 July 2011

Something Else delves into film with its debut otherworldly offering titled Castaway, which acts as a visual accompaniment to the label’s eponymous Spring 2011 collection.

Directed by Lorin Askill (brother of the equally as talented Daniel Askill), the short shows nature in its finest juxtaposition, both beautiful and brutal. This contradiction underlies much of Something Else’s aesthetic. To a throbbing, almost tantric backing track, the film delightfully depicts the designer Natalie Woods’ exploration into the energy inherent in the wilderness. Digitally manipulated to appear in some parts mirror image, the already overwhelming landscape appears to be even more demanding as a lone wanderer - perhaps Woods’ imagined warrior-woman muse - navigates her surrounds.

Against the backdrop of merciless cliff faces, the clothes themselves are brought to the fore without begging for the viewer’s attention. The blowing wind literally breathes life into the garments - the wanderer’s white cape billows in the wind, her red dress is at one with the ochre of the rocks. Castaway is a success in translating the aesthetic of Something Else into the film format and gives us insight into Woods’ creative vision, which we personally can’t get enough of.
