Collection of Curiosities

Charles T Fairthorne's Travelling Collection

By Tania Goode, 24 November 2011

Who is Charles T Fairthorne? He was a naturalist, entomologist, geologist and prominent member of the anthropological community who amassed a collection of Natural History curiosities during his world travels during the 19th century. His private collection of travelling curios helped to raise money to fund his search for the “coconut head hunter” tribe in New Guinea.

Charles T Fairthorne’s old friend, Lord Coconut has enlisted to the help of his in-house jewellers and artisans to create and exhibition celebrating the travelling collection of curiosities. Running until 1oth December the collection includes Justin Siow’s exploration of insects and origami where he creates a Allomyrina dichtoma also known as a Japanese rhinoceros beetle, out of a single sheet of copper. Other Curios include Justine Austen’s 150 Flies in a Jar, Beth Croce’s Fossil with 37 small diamonds along the backbone and Suse Scholem’s Bone cufflinks.

Lord Coconut is Melbourne’s only jewellery store dedicated to handcrafted contemporary jewellery, cufflinks and art, entirely for men. Showcasing works of over 25 jewellers, designers and artisans, Lord Coconut is one of this city’s hidden treasures.
