A Chat with Kym Ellery

Falling For Ellery

By Kat George, 04 May 2011

For her FW11 collection Kym Ellery took to Paris to shoot some hauntingly beautiful imagery. A reimagined Marie Antoinette, Ellery FW11 takes Tenembaum to the Tuileries and Australia to Europe, in what is the young designers most spectacular collection to date. I spoke to Kym about her inspirations, her rising star, and her most favoured of genres, rock’n’roll…

What inspired this collection?
An icy mix between my absolute favourite Wes Anderson film "The Royal Tenenbaums" and the fall of the French Aristocracy circa Marie Antoinette.  An unlikely mix!

Your designs have matured a lot, season to season, but you've maintained a very distinct aesthetic. How do you mature and yet stay true to the unique Ellery style at the same time? It's very impressive!
What a compliment, merci Kat!
I am always trying to offer more women something relevant from my work.  I think it's very important to grow your brand with your customer to a certain point and in saying that I am also still maturing my aesthetic; I hope that also shines through in the collections.

Rock'n'roll seems to inform a lot of your work- what is the relationship between Ellery and music?
It's an ongoing love affair of mine.  There are so many inspiring characters in music and I can't help but to continually reference that.

Who are your musical heroes?
Nick Cave, Velvet Underground, John Lennon, Gang of Four, The Rolling Stones, The Smiths, Bob Dylan, Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourgh, The Clash, Bowie, The Doors, Edith Piaf,  The Stooges, Jeff Buckley and my dear friend Wendy James.
